Greater Richmond · Chesterfield County
Chester sits in northern Chesterfield between Richmond and Petersburg, with a genuinely old village core surrounded by decades of suburban development.
A short description is enough to start. We will connect you with an independent licensed professional covering Chester.
Local pattern
The building pattern here decides which failures are likely, and that changes the first question.
Across Chester the recurring items are roots working into the open joints of a clay lateral or a polybutylene fitting letting go inside a wall with no warning. Every one of those is a consequence of local building practice rather than of anything a household did, and knowing which era a house belongs to rules most of the list out immediately.
The village core and the surrounding subdivisions are different plumbing eras entirely, a few streets apart.
Housing eras, water supply, soil and freeze exposure across the wider region are set out in full on our Greater Richmond page. This page covers what is specific to Chester.

Locate the main shutoff and turn it, to confirm it works. Everything that can go wrong in a house is more survivable if that one valve does its job, and a seized shutoff is a small job now and a disaster later.
The street and the symptom are enough to start narrowing it down.
Common problems
What the common local symptoms usually turn out to be.
| You notice | Usually means | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Low pressure at every tap | A regulator, the service line, or old supply pipe | Water pressure regulator |
| A stain spreading on a ceiling | A supply fitting failing inside the floor structure | Leak detection |
| Blockages that come back on a schedule | Roots in the joints of a clay lateral | Root intrusion removal |
| More than one drain slow at once | A line problem rather than a fixture problem | Drain cleaning |
| No hot water, or not enough of it | A heater fault, or a capacity mismatch | Water heater repair |
| Sewage backing up | A main line blockage. Stop using water | Emergency plumbing |
Tell us which one it is and we will say what it usually means here.
In practice
Detail on two local questions that are hard to cover properly over the phone.
Plumbing installed before mid-century often used fittings no longer permitted, and encountering them is normal rather than alarming. Drum traps, cylindrical, usually under a bath, sometimes with a lid set into the floor, hold a large volume of water, collect debris, and cannot be cleared with a modern cable. S-traps, which drop straight down instead of turning to a vent, siphon themselves dry and let sewer gas into the room. Both worked well enough in their day and both are replaced when the fixture is next opened up.
The venting is the part that matters most and shows least. Whole additions in old houses were plumbed with inadequate venting, which is why fixtures gurgle, drain slowly despite being clear, or let a smell through when another fixture runs. That is not a blockage and cabling will not touch it. Where opening a wall for a proper vent is impractical, an air admittance valve in an accessible location is often the sanctioned remedy. Worth raising specifically, because it is easy to spend money cleaning a drain that was never the problem.
On a house over sixty years old, the plumbing materials are a small part of the bill. What costs money is reaching the pipe and putting the building back afterwards. Lath and plaster does not behave like drywall, it cracks beyond the cut and keys break away from the lath, and matching a three-coat plaster finish is a skilled trade in its own right.
So the questions worth asking before work starts are about method rather than materials. Can the plumber work from the basement, the crawl space, closets and the backs of cabinets rather than from finished walls? Will original trim be removed carefully and refitted rather than cut through? And what exactly does "restored" mean in the quote, patched, paint-ready, or painted? Those are three different prices, and agreeing which one applies prevents most disputes.

Questions
Yes. Chester is covered 24 hours a day, along with Chesterfield, Midlothian, Richmond, Moseley, Henrico and the rest of Greater Richmond. If your address sits just outside Chester itself, ring anyway; coverage is wider than any list of place names.
An older village core with pre-war housing and ageing supply and drainage. Surrounding post-war and late-century subdivisions, including polybutylene phases.
The supply is treated and tested continuously before it reaches Chester, so the quality question is largely settled at the plant. Hardness sits in the moderate range, which shortens heater life slowly rather than causing a problem. Your utility publishes an annual water quality report free of charge, and it answers more than any test you would pay for.
Milder than western Virginia, which is exactly why it catches people. Hoses stay connected in Chester and a single sharp night does the damage, then nothing shows until the tap is next used.
You are on municipal sewer in Chester, but the lateral from the house to the main belongs to you. In the older streets those are clay, jointed every few feet, and roots find them.
Two free checks. Is it one tap or every tap, and does your main shutoff actually close? The first tells us where to look and the second decides how bad the next hour gets.
In most cases yes. Emergencies, a burst pipe, sewage backing up, no water at all, are prioritised over scheduled work, and someone is reachable at any hour. For planned work such as a repipe or a water heater replacement, we will normally offer a slot within a few days.
