Greater Richmond · Henrico County
Henrico County wraps around Richmond on three sides and its housing runs from 1940s inner-ring neighbourhoods through 1990s subdivisions, so the plumbing changes substantially depending on which part of the county a house sits in.
A short description is enough to start. We will connect you with an independent licensed professional covering Henrico.
Local pattern
The building pattern here decides which failures are likely, and that changes the first question.
Around Henrico the same handful recurs: supply pipe that has closed up internally rather than sprung a leak, a polybutylene fitting letting go inside a wall with no warning, or roots working into the open joints of a clay lateral. It is worth knowing the list exists, because recognising the likely cause early is usually the difference between a repair and a replacement.
The decade a Henrico house was built predicts its plumbing better than anything else. Inner-ring means galvanised and cast iron, outer means polybutylene or CPVC.
Housing eras, water supply, soil and freeze exposure across the wider region are set out in full on our Greater Richmond page. This page covers what is specific to Henrico.

That single distinction does more diagnostic work than anything else you can tell us. It separates a cartridge or an aerator from a service line, a regulator, or the pipe itself.
The street and the symptom are enough to start narrowing it down.
Common problems
What the common local symptoms usually turn out to be.
| You notice | Usually means | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure that has faded over years | Rust scale closing the bore of old supply pipe | Whole-home repiping |
| A stain spreading on a ceiling | A supply fitting failing inside the floor structure | Leak detection |
| Blockages that come back on a schedule | Roots in the joints of a clay lateral | Root intrusion removal |
| More than one drain slow at once | A line problem rather than a fixture problem | Drain cleaning |
| No hot water, or not enough of it | A heater fault, or a capacity mismatch | Water heater repair |
| Sewage backing up | A main line blockage. Stop using water | Emergency plumbing |
Tell us which one it is and we will say what it usually means here.
In practice
Detail on two local questions that are hard to cover properly over the phone.
A failing lateral no longer means a trench the length of the property. Where the existing pipe is structurally sound but jointed and root-infested, a cured-in-place liner can be drawn through and hardened to form a continuous jointless pipe inside the old one, no joints means nothing for roots to enter. Where the pipe has collapsed, pipe bursting can pull a new line along the same route while fracturing the old one outward, needing access pits at each end rather than a continuous trench.
Neither is universal. Lining slightly reduces the bore and cannot fix a badly bellied section holding water, and both need the run surveyed on camera first with the depth, material, bends and any offsets recorded. But on a mature lot with established trees, a paved drive or a stone wall over the route, the comparison worth asking for is the lining price against the trench price including everything that has to be put back afterwards.
The material under the front garden depends almost entirely on when the line was laid, and each type fails in its own way. Galvanised steel closes up with internal rust and starves the house of flow. Copper, common mid-century, is generally excellent but corrodes from outside in aggressive soil, producing pinholes. Polybutylene turns up on service lines from the late seventies to the mid-nineties and is prone to the same oxidative failure as the interior pipe. Modern polyethylene, laid in one continuous coil with no joints between meter and house, is the current standard and by far the most reliable.
Knowing which you have tells you what to expect and what to plan for. A jointless polyethylene line is not worth worrying about. A steel or polybutylene service line is on borrowed time, and replacement is a single day's work that can often be done by pulling a new line through rather than trenching the whole route. The meter test, everything off, watch the dial, is what catches the failure early either way.

Questions
Yes. Henrico is covered 24 hours a day, along with Richmond, Glen Allen, Sandston, Mechanicsville, Ashland and the rest of Greater Richmond. If your address sits just outside Henrico itself, ring anyway; coverage is wider than any list of place names.
Inner-ring post-war neighbourhoods with ageing galvanised supply and cast iron drainage. Outer-county 1980s and 1990s subdivisions inside the polybutylene window.
The supply is treated and tested continuously before it reaches Henrico, so the quality question is largely settled at the plant. Hardness sits in the moderate range, which shortens heater life slowly rather than causing a problem. Your utility publishes an annual water quality report free of charge, and it answers more than any test you would pay for.
Not severe, but real. A few hard nights a winter is all it takes around Henrico, and the split usually goes unnoticed until spring because a closed tap does not leak.
Public sewer covers Henrico. The ownership boundary is the point worth remembering: everything from the building to the main is the property owner's, including any blockage or break in it.
Before anything else, locate the shutoff. Then note whether hot, cold or both are affected, and whether it is one room or the whole house. Those answers rule out more than any amount of description of the noise.
In most cases yes. Emergencies, a burst pipe, sewage backing up, no water at all, are prioritised over scheduled work, and someone is reachable at any hour. For planned work such as a repipe or a water heater replacement, we will normally offer a slot within a few days.
