Pilot is a very small rural community on the Montgomery and Floyd county line, thinly settled at elevation in wooded country.
What is happening, and where. We will put you in touch with an independent licensed professional who already works in Pilot.
Local pattern
The building pattern here decides which failures are likely, and that changes the first question.
What actually fails in Pilot is fairly predictable: a drain field asked to take more water than the soil will accept or a pressure tank losing its air charge and driving the pump into short cycling. We say that not to guess at your property but because the local pattern is strong enough to be worth stating, and the build date is what tells us where in the pattern you sit.
On the Montgomery and Floyd county line, at elevation and at the end of long roads, Pilot combines the deepest cold with the longest wait. That combination is the whole argument for doing freeze protection properly in October.
Housing eras, water supply, soil and freeze exposure across the wider region are set out in full on our Southside & Southwest page. This page covers what is specific to Pilot.

A submersible pump is cooled by the water around it. If it is running and delivering nothing, switch it off at the breaker before anything else. Running dry destroys one in hours, and that turns a diagnosis into a replacement.
The street and the symptom are enough to start narrowing it down.
Common problems
What the common local symptoms usually turn out to be.
| You notice | Usually means | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Low pressure, or pressure that surges | A pressure tank that has lost its air charge | Well pump & water systems |
| No water at all | Pump, switch, or a frozen line depending on the season | Well pump & water systems |
| Slow drains everywhere, or wet ground over the field | A tank due for pumping, or a field at its limit | Septic system plumbing |
| A tap that gives nothing on a cold morning | A frozen line, and possibly one already split | Frozen pipe repair |
| Sewage backing up | A main line blockage. Stop using water | Emergency plumbing |
Tell us which one it is and we will say what it usually means here.
In practice
Detail on two local questions that are hard to cover properly over the phone.
Sand or fine grit at the aerators is not a nuisance to be filtered away and forgotten. It usually means one of three things: the well screen has failed, the pump is set low enough to be drawing from the accumulated sediment at the bottom of the bore, or the casing has a breach admitting material from the formation. Each of those is a structural matter, and each gets worse rather than better.
Meanwhile the grit itself does mechanical damage on its way through. Scoring pump impellers, cutting valve seats so taps drip, and settling in the base of the water heater. A sediment filter ahead of the house protects the fixtures and is worth fitting, but treat it as a symptom control while the cause gets diagnosed, not as the repair. Raising the pump a few feet is sometimes the entire fix.
Drain fields fail from too much water as readily as from too many solids. A field is sized for a household's daily flow, and exceeding it consistently saturates the soil so it stops accepting liquid, which is what produces soggy ground, unusually green grass over the field, and drains that slow throughout the house at once.
The practical consequences are simple. Spread laundry across the week rather than running eight loads on a Saturday. Fix a running toilet the week you notice it, because one can add several hundred gallons a day to a system built for normal use. And keep roof, driveway and sump discharge directed well clear of the field. Rainwater has no business in a septic drain field.

Questions
Yes. Pilot is covered 24 hours a day, along with Penhook, Ridgeway, Riner, Rocky Mount, Montvale and the rest of Southside & Southwest. If your address sits just outside Pilot itself, ring anyway; coverage is wider than any list of place names.
High elevation with severe, sustained winter cold rather than isolated frosts. Long access roads that weather badly, delaying any winter response.
It depends entirely on your own bore, and there is no utility report to fall back on in Pilot. What we can say is that bedrock wells here are frequently hard, often with iron alongside. Test first and buy second. A softener does nothing for bacteria, a UV lamp does nothing for iron, and a carbon filter does nothing for hardness, so the panel is what decides which you need.
A genuine design factor rather than an occasional nuisance. Pilot holds below freezing for days at a time, and duration is what does the damage. A short cold night is survivable, a long spell finds every gap in the insulation. Disconnecting every hose in November prevents the majority of outdoor tap failures.
Septic across most of Pilot, which puts the whole system inside your property line and outside anyone else's inspection regime. The one number worth having is the measured sludge depth at each pumping, because a few years of those readings sets your true interval far better than a rule of thumb.
Look at the wellhead and the tank, in that order. The casing should stand proud of the ground with an intact cap, and nothing should be pooling around it. Then at the tank: note the gauge reading and whether the pump cycles rapidly under a running tap, because rapid cycling is a tank fault and it destroys pumps while you wait.
In most cases yes. Emergencies, a burst pipe, sewage backing up, no water at all, are prioritised over scheduled work, and someone is reachable at any hour. For planned work such as a repipe or a water heater replacement, we will normally offer a slot within a few days.
Independent licensed professionals working locally. Nova Plumbing Connect is a referral service. We connect you with a contractor and they are responsible for the work they carry out. We do not perform plumbing work ourselves.
