Shawsville is a small Montgomery County community in the upper Roanoke valley, with older housing and rural land around it.
A short description is enough to start. We will connect you with an independent licensed professional covering Shawsville.
Local pattern
The building pattern here decides which failures are likely, and that changes the first question.
Ask what goes wrong in Shawsville and the answer is usually a drain field asked to take more water than the soil will accept or a pressure tank losing its air charge and driving the pump into short cycling. The pattern follows the housing rather than the address, so the useful opening question is when the place was built and what the pipe looks like where it is visible.
The upper Roanoke valley runs cold and narrow, and the old corridor housing along it was built close to the ground with shallow crawl spaces. Those crawl spaces are where nearly every winter call in Shawsville begins.
Housing eras, water supply, soil and freeze exposure across the wider region are set out in full on our Southside & Southwest page. This page covers what is specific to Shawsville.

A failing pressure tank makes a pump behave alarmingly. Most Shawsville well call-outs that sound like a dead pump turn out to be a tank, which is a fraction of the cost, if it is caught first.
Give us the address and the symptom and we will take it from there.
Common problems
The local shortlist, matched to where it leads.
| You notice | Usually means | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Low pressure, or pressure that surges | A pressure tank that has lost its air charge | Well pump & water systems |
| No water at all | Pump, switch, or a frozen line depending on the season | Well pump & water systems |
| Slow drains everywhere, or wet ground over the field | A tank due for pumping, or a field at its limit | Septic system plumbing |
| Sewage backing up | A main line blockage. Stop using water | Emergency plumbing |

In practice
Two local issues worth understanding before you need someone out.
A drilled well is a straight route from the surface into the aquifer, and the only thing closing that route is the sanitary cap on top of the casing and the grout seal around it. A cracked cap, a missing screened vent, or a casing that finishes flush with the ground rather than a foot above it lets surface water, insects and small animals straight in, and that is the origin of most bacteria results on wells that have never had a problem before.
Look at it once a year. The casing should stand proud of the surrounding grade, the ground should slope away from it, the cap should be intact and bolted down, and nothing should be stacked against it. Keep fuel, fertiliser, pesticide and livestock well away from the head, and never let a hose end sit in a puddle or a stock trough, because a pressure drop can pull that water backwards into the plumbing.
When every drain in a septic-served house slows at once, there are three candidates and they are cheap to tell apart. The line from the house to the tank may be blocked, the tank may be full to the point where the outlet is submerged in scum, or the drain field may have stopped accepting liquid. Gurgling from the lowest fixtures with normal use elsewhere points at the first; sewage backing up towards the house points at the second or third.
The distinction matters because the costs are an order of magnitude apart. A blocked inlet line is a straightforward clearing job. A tank at capacity is a pumping job. A saturated field is a project. Opening the tank lid and looking is what settles it in ten minutes, which is why an accessible, marked lid, or a fitted riser bringing it to grade, pays for itself the first time something goes wrong.

Questions
Yes. Shawsville is covered 24 hours a day, along with Spencer, Stanleytown, Rocky Mount, Thaxton, Riner and the rest of Southside & Southwest. If your address sits just outside Shawsville itself, ring anyway; coverage is wider than any list of place names.
Shallow, poorly sealed crawl spaces on older corridor housing, exposed to valley cold. Pressure tanks failing and short-cycling pumps as the most frequent well fault.
Your well is its own answer, and it can differ sharply from the one next door. Around Shawsville bedrock wells commonly return hardness and iron together, which is why the staining and the scale often arrive at the same time. Bacteria and nitrate are worth testing annually whatever the mineral content; a fuller panel every three to five years covers the rest.
Not severe, but real. A few hard nights a winter is all it takes around Shawsville, and the split usually goes unnoticed until spring because a closed tap does not leak.
Private septic systems throughout most of Shawsville. Tanks want pumping every three to five years, sooner with a garbage disposal or a large household, and that interval is what keeps solids out of the drain field.
Check the breaker for the pump first, then listen at the tank. A silent pump points at the breaker, the pressure switch or the pump; a running pump with no water at the tap points at a dropped water level or a broken drop pipe, and it should be switched off before anything else.
In most cases yes. Emergencies, a burst pipe, sewage backing up, no water at all, are prioritised over scheduled work, and someone is reachable at any hour. For planned work such as a repipe or a water heater replacement, we will normally offer a slot within a few days.
