Southside & Southwest · Henry County
Ridgeway is a small Henry County town south of Martinsville near the North Carolina line, with older housing and rural land around it.
A short description is enough to start. We will connect you with an independent licensed professional covering Ridgeway.
Local pattern
The building pattern here decides which failures are likely, and that changes the first question.
Across Ridgeway the recurring items are supply pipe that has closed up internally rather than sprung a leak, a drain field asked to take more water than the soil will accept, or fixtures worn out by a duty cycle several times ordinary domestic use. Every one of those is a consequence of local building practice rather than of anything a household did, and knowing which era a house belongs to rules most of the list out immediately.
Much of this housing was built by employers to a single specification, which means whole streets share not just an age but an identical plumbing design, and they reach the end of it at the same time.
Housing eras, water supply, soil and freeze exposure across the wider region are set out in full on our Southside & Southwest page. This page covers what is specific to Ridgeway.

A hose-thread pressure gauge on the outside tap tells you in thirty seconds whether the house is running above the 80 psi code limit. It is the only plumbing test a homeowner can do completely and accurately.

Common problems
The local shortlist, matched to where it leads.
| You notice | Usually means | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure that has faded over years | Rust scale closing the bore of old supply pipe | Whole-home repiping |
| A stain spreading on a ceiling | A supply fitting failing inside the floor structure | Leak detection |
| Slow drains everywhere, or wet ground over the field | A tank due for pumping, or a field at its limit | Septic system plumbing |
| Drains slowing in a kitchen that trades | Grease coating the line, not a blockage | Hydro jetting |
| No hot water, or not enough of it | A heater fault, or a capacity mismatch | Water heater repair |
| Sewage backing up | A main line blockage. Stop using water | Emergency plumbing |

In practice
Two local issues worth understanding before you need someone out.
Plumbing installed before mid-century often used fittings no longer permitted, and encountering them is normal rather than alarming. Drum traps, cylindrical, usually under a bath, sometimes with a lid set into the floor, hold a large volume of water, collect debris, and cannot be cleared with a modern cable. S-traps, which drop straight down instead of turning to a vent, siphon themselves dry and let sewer gas into the room. Both worked well enough in their day and both are replaced when the fixture is next opened up.
The venting is the part that matters most and shows least. Whole additions in old houses were plumbed with inadequate venting, which is why fixtures gurgle, drain slowly despite being clear, or let a smell through when another fixture runs. That is not a blockage and cabling will not touch it. Where opening a wall for a proper vent is impractical, an air admittance valve in an accessible location is often the sanctioned remedy. Worth raising specifically, because it is easy to spend money cleaning a drain that was never the problem.
In most commercial buildings the isolation valves have never been catalogued, and a good number of them no longer turn. The consequence only shows up in an emergency: a failure on one fixture becomes a shutdown of the entire building, because nobody can isolate any smaller section with confidence. That converts a two-hour repair into a day of closed premises, which in most trades costs far more than the plumbing.
The fix is unexciting and permanent. Have every valve located, labelled, exercised and recorded on a simple riser diagram; replace the ones that have seized; and add isolation where a wing, a floor or a tenancy currently has none. Keep the diagram where staff can find it out of hours, and exercise the main valves annually so they still work when needed. It is a scheduled half-day that most buildings have never had, and it changes what every future incident costs.

Questions
Yes. Ridgeway is covered 24 hours a day, along with Axton, Collinsville, Fieldale, Spencer, Stanleytown and the rest of Southside & Southwest. If your address sits just outside Ridgeway itself, ring anyway; coverage is wider than any list of place names.
Mill-era company housing of near-identical specification, failing street by street. Galvanised supply that has closed up internally rather than sprung a leak.
The supply is treated and tested continuously before it reaches Ridgeway, so the quality question is largely settled at the plant. Hardness sits in the moderate range, which shortens heater life slowly rather than causing a problem. Your utility publishes an annual water quality report free of charge, and it answers more than any test you would pay for.
Moderate, and that is the trap. Ridgeway does not get the sustained cold that makes people prepare, so hoses stay on and outdoor taps stay connected, and one sharp night is enough to split the tap body where the trapped water sits.
Septic across most of Ridgeway, which puts the whole system inside your property line and outside anyone else's inspection regime. The one number worth having is the measured sludge depth at each pumping, because a few years of those readings sets your true interval far better than a rule of thumb.
Two minutes of looking is worth ten of describing. Confirm the main shutoff turns; check whether the problem is hot, cold or both; and if you have a gauge, read the pressure at the outside tap. Hot-side-only points at the heater or the hot distribution, and that alone halves the search.
In most cases yes. Emergencies, a burst pipe, sewage backing up, no water at all, are prioritised over scheduled work, and someone is reachable at any hour. For planned work such as a repipe or a water heater replacement, we will normally offer a slot within a few days.
