Southside & Southwest · Henry County
Spencer is a small rural Henry County community close to the North Carolina line, in farmland and woodland.
Describe the symptom and roughly when the house was built. That pair narrows most Spencer calls before anyone drives out.
Local pattern
The building pattern here decides which failures are likely, and that changes the first question.
Across Spencer the recurring items are a drain field asked to take more water than the soil will accept or a pressure tank losing its air charge and driving the pump into short cycling. Every one of those is a consequence of local building practice rather than of anything a household did, and knowing which era a house belongs to rules most of the list out immediately.
Close to the North Carolina line, Spencer's drain fields sit in dense red clay with limited depth to work with. Keeping roof water, driveway runoff and laundry load off the field is most of what determines whether it lasts.
Housing eras, water supply, soil and freeze exposure across the wider region are set out in full on our Southside & Southwest page. This page covers what is specific to Spencer.

Well depth, pump setting, tank size and the date of the last service, on one sheet of paper near the tank. Very few Spencer properties have it, and having it turns a diagnostic visit into a repair visit.
The street and the symptom are enough to start narrowing it down.
Common problems
What the common local symptoms usually turn out to be.
| You notice | Usually means | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Low pressure, or pressure that surges | A pressure tank that has lost its air charge | Well pump & water systems |
| No water at all | Pump, switch, or a frozen line depending on the season | Well pump & water systems |
| Slow drains everywhere, or wet ground over the field | A tank due for pumping, or a field at its limit | Septic system plumbing |
| Sewage backing up | A main line blockage. Stop using water | Emergency plumbing |

In practice
Detail on two local questions that are hard to cover properly over the phone.
The drain field is the part you cannot replace cheaply, and most of the damage done to it is mechanical rather than biological. Vehicle weight compacts the soil and crushes distribution pipe, so no parking, no turning, no trailers. Structures prevent the evaporation and oxygen exchange the field depends on, so no sheds, patios, pools or raised beds. Tree and shrub roots find the pipe, so grass is the correct planting and the only one.
It is worth knowing where your field and its designated reserve area actually are, and marking them. Virginia health departments hold the permit records, including tank size and field layout, and if a garage or extension has been built over the reserve area the property has quietly lost its future replacement option.
Iron announces itself as orange-brown staining in toilet cisterns, on shower trays and through white laundry; manganese does the same in black or grey. Neither is a health concern at the levels normally found, but both are relentless, and no amount of scrubbing keeps ahead of water that deposits fresh stain every day. Chlorine bleach makes iron staining permanently worse, which is why the usual cleaning instinct backfires here.
Treatment depends on which form the metal is in. Dissolved iron in clear water needs oxidation before filtration; water that is already orange out of the tap has oxidised in the pipe and can be filtered directly; and iron bacteria, which leaves a slimy reddish film inside cisterns, needs disinfection rather than filtration. A laboratory panel distinguishes them for a modest fee, and picking equipment without one is how households end up with a filter that does nothing.

Questions
Yes. Spencer is covered 24 hours a day, along with Axton, Collinsville, Fieldale, Ridgeway, Stanleytown and the rest of Southside & Southwest. If your address sits just outside Spencer itself, ring anyway; coverage is wider than any list of place names.
Dense red clay with limited absorption, making hydraulic load the deciding factor. Roof and driveway runoff reaching drain fields that cannot cope with the extra water.
There is no utility answer for Spencer. Almost everything here is on a private well, and hardness varies property to property. Bedrock wells here commonly return hard water and often iron. A panel from a certified lab is what tells you, and local health departments periodically run low-cost clinics.
Enough to matter once or twice a winter. Around Spencer the risk concentrates in the obvious places, outdoor taps, garages, and any run against an exterior wall, and disconnecting the hoses in November removes most of it for nothing.
Almost entirely septic here. Worth knowing that the local health department holds the permit file for every system, tank size, field layout and the designated reserve area, and that file is free to request, which is a great deal easier than probing the lawn for a lid when something goes wrong.
Three things, all free. Whether the pump breaker has tripped, what the pressure gauge reads, and whether the pump is short cycling. If it is cycling every few seconds, switch it off at the breaker. That single action protects an expensive component from a cheap fault.
In most cases yes. Emergencies, a burst pipe, sewage backing up, no water at all, are prioritised over scheduled work, and someone is reachable at any hour. For planned work such as a repipe or a water heater replacement, we will normally offer a slot within a few days.
