Northern Virginia · Fairfax County
Great Falls is a large-lot, low-density part of Fairfax County where a great many properties run on private wells and septic systems despite the affluence and the location.
What is happening, and where. We will put you in touch with an independent licensed professional who already works in Great Falls.
Local pattern
The building pattern here decides which failures are likely, and that changes the first question.
Ask what goes wrong in Great Falls and the answer is usually a drain field asked to take more water than the soil will accept or a pressure tank losing its air charge and driving the pump into short cycling. The pattern follows the housing rather than the address, so the useful opening question is when the place was built and what the pipe looks like where it is visible.
Substantial houses on entirely private infrastructure. Large households, guest accommodation and extensive irrigation all draw on one well and discharge to one drain field, and the systems are frequently the oldest thing on the property.
Housing eras, water supply, soil and freeze exposure across the wider region are set out in full on our Northern Virginia page. This page covers what is specific to Great Falls.

Well depth, pump setting, tank size and the date of the last service, on one sheet of paper near the tank. Very few Great Falls properties have it, and having it turns a diagnostic visit into a repair visit.
Give us the address and the symptom and we will take it from there.
Common problems
The local shortlist, matched to where it leads.
| You notice | Usually means | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Low pressure, or pressure that surges | A pressure tank that has lost its air charge | Well pump & water systems |
| No water at all | Pump, switch, or a frozen line depending on the season | Well pump & water systems |
| Slow drains everywhere, or wet ground over the field | A tank due for pumping, or a field at its limit | Septic system plumbing |
| Sewage backing up | A main line blockage. Stop using water | Emergency plumbing |

In practice
Two local issues worth understanding before you need someone out.
Sand or fine grit at the aerators is not a nuisance to be filtered away and forgotten. It usually means one of three things: the well screen has failed, the pump is set low enough to be drawing from the accumulated sediment at the bottom of the bore, or the casing has a breach admitting material from the formation. Each of those is a structural matter, and each gets worse rather than better.
Meanwhile the grit itself does mechanical damage on its way through. Scoring pump impellers, cutting valve seats so taps drip, and settling in the base of the water heater. A sediment filter ahead of the house protects the fixtures and is worth fitting, but treat it as a symptom control while the cause gets diagnosed, not as the repair. Raising the pump a few feet is sometimes the entire fix.
A septic system has one cheap component and one expensive one. The tank can be pumped for a few hundred dollars; a failed drain field is a five-figure project needing soil evaluation, health department permitting and suitable land. Everything worth doing in septic care exists to protect the second with the first.
Sludge and scum accumulate inside the tank until they reach the outlet baffle, and once solids start travelling out to the field they clog the soil pores permanently. Damage that pumping afterwards cannot reverse. Three to five years is the normal interval, sooner for a large household, a smaller tank, or a house with a garbage disposal. Ask the pumper to measure the sludge and scum depths each visit and keep the record; a few years of measurements sets your true interval far better than a rule of thumb.

Questions
Yes. Great Falls is covered 24 hours a day, along with Fairfax, Herndon, Vienna, Centreville, Chantilly and the rest of Northern Virginia. If your address sits just outside Great Falls itself, ring anyway; coverage is wider than any list of place names.
Large houses on private wells and septic, with no public sewer across most of the area. Extensive irrigation drawing on the same well that supplies the house.
It depends entirely on your own bore, and there is no utility report to fall back on in Great Falls. What we can say is that bedrock wells here are frequently hard, often with iron alongside. Test first and buy second. A softener does nothing for bacteria, a UV lamp does nothing for iron, and a carbon filter does nothing for hardness, so the panel is what decides which you need.
Enough to matter once or twice a winter. Around Great Falls the risk concentrates in the obvious places, outdoor taps, garages, and any run against an exterior wall, and disconnecting the hoses in November removes most of it for nothing.
Almost entirely septic here. Worth knowing that the local health department holds the permit file for every system, tank size, field layout and the designated reserve area, and that file is free to request, which is a great deal easier than probing the lawn for a lid when something goes wrong.
Three things, all free. Whether the pump breaker has tripped, what the pressure gauge reads, and whether the pump is short cycling. If it is cycling every few seconds, switch it off at the breaker. That single action protects an expensive component from a cheap fault.
In most cases yes. Emergencies, a burst pipe, sewage backing up, no water at all, are prioritised over scheduled work, and someone is reachable at any hour. For planned work such as a repipe or a water heater replacement, we will normally offer a slot within a few days.
