Greater Richmond · Greater Richmond
Rockville is a small rural community in western Hanover, sitting between the Richmond suburbs and open farmland, with most properties on their own water and waste.
Tell us the street and roughly when the house was built. Those two together rule out more possibilities than any description of the noise.
Local pattern
The building pattern here decides which failures are likely, and that changes the first question.
Across Rockville the recurring items are a pressure tank losing its air charge and driving the pump into short cycling or a drain field asked to take more water than the soil will accept. Every one of those is a consequence of local building practice rather than of anything a household did, and knowing which era a house belongs to rules most of the list out immediately.
Houses here are built to suburban expectations on rural infrastructure. Three bathrooms, a laundry and an irrigation system are a real load on a well that was drilled for a farmhouse, and the well loses that argument.
Housing eras, water supply, soil and freeze exposure across the wider region are set out in full on our Greater Richmond page. This page covers what is specific to Rockville.

A failing pressure tank makes a pump behave alarmingly. Most Rockville well call-outs that sound like a dead pump turn out to be a tank, which is a fraction of the cost, if it is caught first.
Say the street and the symptom. That is usually enough to narrow it before anyone drives out.
Common problems
The local patterns, and where each one leads.
| You notice | Usually means | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Low pressure, or pressure that surges | A pressure tank that has lost its air charge | Well pump & water systems |
| No water at all | Pump, switch, or a frozen line depending on the season | Well pump & water systems |
| Slow drains everywhere, or wet ground over the field | A tank due for pumping, or a field at its limit | Septic system plumbing |
| Sewage backing up | A main line blockage. Stop using water | Emergency plumbing |
Describe it on the phone. Most calls narrow to two or three possibilities before anyone arrives.
In practice
Two things that come up repeatedly on local jobs, in more detail than the phone allows.
Sand or fine grit at the aerators is not a nuisance to be filtered away and forgotten. It usually means one of three things: the well screen has failed, the pump is set low enough to be drawing from the accumulated sediment at the bottom of the bore, or the casing has a breach admitting material from the formation. Each of those is a structural matter, and each gets worse rather than better.
Meanwhile the grit itself does mechanical damage on its way through. Scoring pump impellers, cutting valve seats so taps drip, and settling in the base of the water heater. A sediment filter ahead of the house protects the fixtures and is worth fitting, but treat it as a symptom control while the cause gets diagnosed, not as the repair. Raising the pump a few feet is sometimes the entire fix.
Iron announces itself as orange-brown staining in toilet cisterns, on shower trays and through white laundry; manganese does the same in black or grey. Neither is a health concern at the levels normally found, but both are relentless, and no amount of scrubbing keeps ahead of water that deposits fresh stain every day. Chlorine bleach makes iron staining permanently worse, which is why the usual cleaning instinct backfires here.
Treatment depends on which form the metal is in. Dissolved iron in clear water needs oxidation before filtration; water that is already orange out of the tap has oxidised in the pipe and can be filtered directly; and iron bacteria, which leaves a slimy reddish film inside cisterns, needs disinfection rather than filtration. A laboratory panel distinguishes them for a modest fee, and picking equipment without one is how households end up with a filter that does nothing.

Yes. Rockville is covered 24 hours a day, along with Sandston, Quinton, Powhatan, Stevensville, Trevilians and the rest of Greater Richmond. If your address sits just outside Rockville itself, ring anyway; coverage is wider than any list of place names.
Suburban-scale water demand on wells drilled to an older specification. Hard Piedmont water that scales heaters, tankless exchangers and fixture cartridges.
Nobody monitors a private well but its owner, so in Rockville the useful answer comes from a laboratory rather than from us. Hardness and iron are both common in wells here. The Virginia Household Water Quality Program and local health departments run periodic low-cost testing clinics, which is the cheapest route to results you can actually specify equipment against.
Not severe, but real. A few hard nights a winter is all it takes around Rockville, and the split usually goes unnoticed until spring because a closed tap does not leak.
Private septic systems throughout most of Rockville. Tanks want pumping every three to five years, sooner with a garbage disposal or a large household, and that interval is what keeps solids out of the drain field.
Check the breaker for the pump first, then listen at the tank. A silent pump points at the breaker, the pressure switch or the pump; a running pump with no water at the tap points at a dropped water level or a broken drop pipe, and it should be switched off before anything else.
In most cases yes. Emergencies, a burst pipe, sewage backing up, no water at all, are prioritised over scheduled work, and someone is reachable at any hour. For planned work such as a repipe or a water heater replacement, we will normally offer a slot within a few days.
Independent licensed professionals working locally. Nova Plumbing Connect is a referral service. We connect you with a contractor and they are responsible for the work they carry out. We do not perform plumbing work ourselves.
