Northern Virginia · Loudoun County
Aldie is a small historic Loudoun village that has seen substantial new large-scale residential development pushed up against it in recent years.
Tell us the street and roughly when the house was built. Those two together rule out more possibilities than any description of the noise.
Local pattern
The building pattern here decides which failures are likely, and that changes the first question.
In Aldie the short list runs to a pressure tank losing its air charge and driving the pump into short cycling or a drain field asked to take more water than the soil will accept. Local building history narrows it that far before anyone looks at a specific property, and it is why two facts, the era of the house and the visible pipe material, settle most calls quickly.
Brand-new subdivisions and a nineteenth-century village share the same postcode here.
Housing eras, water supply, soil and freeze exposure across the wider region are set out in full on our Northern Virginia page. This page covers what is specific to Aldie.

What the pressure gauge reads, and whether the pump cycles rapidly while a tap runs. Those two answers separate a cheap tank repair from an expensive pump replacement.
Tell us where and what. We can usually name the likely cause on the call.
Common problems

| You notice | Usually means | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Low pressure, or pressure that surges | A pressure tank that has lost its air charge | Well pump & water systems |
| No water at all | Pump, switch, or a frozen line depending on the season | Well pump & water systems |
| Slow drains everywhere, or wet ground over the field | A tank due for pumping, or a field at its limit | Septic system plumbing |
| Sewage backing up | A main line blockage. Stop using water | Emergency plumbing |
A short description usually narrows it to two or three causes.
In practice
The two topics Aldie callers most often want explained at length.
Every permitted septic system in Virginia has a file with the local health department, and that file usually contains the tank size, the field layout, the soil evaluation and the location of the designated reserve area. It costs nothing to request. Having it on hand means a pumper is not probing the lawn to find the tank lid, and it means you know where not to build.
That last point is the one that catches people. The reserve area is the land set aside for the replacement field the property will eventually need, and it only works if it stays undisturbed. Once a garage, a pool, a paddock or a stand of trees occupies it, the property has quietly lost its cheapest future option, and the replacement becomes an engineered system at several times the cost. Check the file before any outbuilding goes in.
When every drain in a septic-served house slows at once, there are three candidates and they are cheap to tell apart. The line from the house to the tank may be blocked, the tank may be full to the point where the outlet is submerged in scum, or the drain field may have stopped accepting liquid. Gurgling from the lowest fixtures with normal use elsewhere points at the first; sewage backing up towards the house points at the second or third.
The distinction matters because the costs are an order of magnitude apart. A blocked inlet line is a straightforward clearing job. A tank at capacity is a pumping job. A saturated field is a project. Opening the tank lid and looking is what settles it in ten minutes, which is why an accessible, marked lid, or a fitted riser bringing it to grade, pays for itself the first time something goes wrong.

A historic village core alongside very recent large-scale development. Modern PEX and CPVC supply in the new construction.
Nobody monitors a private well but its owner, so in Aldie the useful answer comes from a laboratory rather than from us. Hardness and iron are both common in wells here. The Virginia Household Water Quality Program and local health departments run periodic low-cost testing clinics, which is the cheapest route to results you can actually specify equipment against.
Manageable, but not to be ignored. Aldie gets enough freezing nights each winter to split an unprotected outdoor tap, and the damage usually surfaces in spring when someone opens it and the water goes into the wall instead of out of the spout.
Mostly septic. In Aldie the majority of properties run their own tank and drain field, which makes the pumping interval the single biggest determinant of long-term cost. The tank is cheap to service, the field is not cheap to replace.
Look at the pressure gauge by the tank: note what it reads when the pump starts and stops, and whether the pump is cycling rapidly while a tap runs. If it cycles every few seconds, switch it off at the breaker. That protects the pump from what is usually a much cheaper tank fault.
In most cases yes. Emergencies, a burst pipe, sewage backing up, no water at all, are prioritised over scheduled work, and someone is reachable at any hour. For planned work such as a repipe or a water heater replacement, we will normally offer a slot within a few days.
