Henry is a small rural community in northern Henry County near Philpott Lake, mixing farm properties with lake-adjacent housing.
A short description is enough to start. We will connect you with an independent licensed professional covering Henry.
Local pattern
The building pattern here decides which failures are likely, and that changes the first question.
Around Henry the same handful recurs: a pressure tank losing its air charge and driving the pump into short cycling, a drain field asked to take more water than the soil will accept, or pipe in an uninsulated crawl space under a house that stood empty through a cold snap. It is worth knowing the list exists, because recognising the likely cause early is usually the difference between a repair and a replacement.
Philpott Lake brings the pattern found around every Virginia reservoir: houses built as summer places, later used year-round or hardly at all, with plumbing specified for neither.
Housing eras, water supply, soil and freeze exposure across the wider region are set out in full on our Southside & Southwest page. This page covers what is specific to Henry.

Well depth, pump setting, tank size and the date of the last service, on one sheet of paper near the tank. Very few Henry properties have it, and having it turns a diagnostic visit into a repair visit.
Give us the address and the symptom and we will take it from there.
Common problems
The local shortlist, matched to where it leads.
| You notice | Usually means | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Low pressure, or pressure that surges | A pressure tank that has lost its air charge | Well pump & water systems |
| No water at all | Pump, switch, or a frozen line depending on the season | Well pump & water systems |
| Slow drains everywhere, or wet ground over the field | A tank due for pumping, or a field at its limit | Septic system plumbing |
| A tap that gives nothing on a cold morning | A frozen line, and possibly one already split | Frozen pipe repair |
| Sewage backing up | A main line blockage. Stop using water | Emergency plumbing |
Say what you are seeing and we will tell you the likely cause locally.
In practice
Two local issues worth understanding before you need someone out.
There are two defensible ways to leave a house through a Virginia winter and one common mistake. You can keep it heated above freezing, which costs money but leaves the plumbing in normal service. Or you can winterise it: close the main, drain the system from the lowest point, empty the water heater, blow the lines down if possible, and put non-toxic antifreeze in the traps and toilet bowls so they do not crack. The mistake is the middle course, heat turned down to fifty and nobody visiting, which fails the moment the heating does.
If a property is left heated, it wants two things a thermostat cannot provide: someone checking it during a cold spell, and an alarm that reports a low temperature or the presence of water while there is still time to act. Cellular or wifi sensors cost very little now. The alternative is measured in weeks of running water through a floor, which is the single most expensive thing that happens to seasonal housing.
A working tank already has all the bacteria it needs, arriving continuously from the household. The products sold to add more, or to dissolve the sludge layer, do not remove solids from the tank, and the ones aggressive enough to break up a settled sludge blanket can push that material out to the drain field, which is exactly the outcome the tank exists to prevent. No additive has ever extended a pumping interval in a way that survives measurement.
What genuinely helps costs nothing. Keep fats, coffee grounds, wipes and so-called flushable products out of the system. Go easy on bleach and drain cleaner, which kill the bacteria doing the work. Skip the garbage disposal, or accept a shorter pumping interval if you keep it. And spend the additive money on having the sludge depth measured instead, because that number is what tells you when the tank actually needs emptying.

Yes. Henry is covered 24 hours a day, along with Hardy, Huddleston, Indian Valley, Goodview, Glade Hill and the rest of Southside & Southwest. If your address sits just outside Henry itself, ring anyway; coverage is wider than any list of place names.
Lake housing built to a summer specification and now occupied unpredictably. Properties standing empty through cold snaps, where a split line runs for days.
Your well is its own answer, and it can differ sharply from the one next door. Around Henry bedrock wells commonly return hardness and iron together, which is why the staining and the scale often arrive at the same time. Bacteria and nitrate are worth testing annually whatever the mineral content; a fuller panel every three to five years covers the rest.
Take it seriously here. The cold in Henry arrives and settles, which means anything crossing a crawl space, garage or outbuilding needs to be dealt with in October rather than during the forecast that finally catches it. Properties standing empty through a cold snap are the ones that split, because nobody is there to notice.
Almost entirely septic here. Worth knowing that the local health department holds the permit file for every system, tank size, field layout and the designated reserve area, and that file is free to request, which is a great deal easier than probing the lawn for a lid when something goes wrong.
Three things, all free. Whether the pump breaker has tripped, what the pressure gauge reads, and whether the pump is short cycling. If it is cycling every few seconds, switch it off at the breaker. That single action protects an expensive component from a cheap fault.
In most cases yes. Emergencies, a burst pipe, sewage backing up, no water at all, are prioritised over scheduled work, and someone is reachable at any hour. For planned work such as a repipe or a water heater replacement, we will normally offer a slot within a few days.
