Local pattern

What fails first in Check

The building pattern here decides which failures are likely, and that changes the first question.

Across Check the recurring items are a pressure tank losing its air charge and driving the pump into short cycling. Every one of those is a consequence of local building practice rather than of anything a household did, and knowing which era a house belongs to rules most of the list out immediately.

The Blue Ridge plateau is genuinely high ground, and the cold here is not a matter of a few sharp nights. Freezing spells settle in for days at a stretch, and anything that was going to fail has time to.

Housing eras, water supply, soil and freeze exposure across the wider region are set out in full on our Southside & Southwest page. This page covers what is specific to Check.

Check, Southside & Southwest. What a house is made of and when it was built matter more than the address.

Two facts we will ask for

What the pressure gauge reads, and whether the pump cycles rapidly while a tap runs. Those two answers separate a cheap tank repair from an expensive pump replacement.

Common problems

What we are called about in Check

What the common local symptoms usually turn out to be.

  • Plateau elevation producing the longest and deepest cold in this part of Virginia
  • Fractured-rock wells with unpredictable yield and slow recovery
  • Well houses and pump enclosures doing real work, and failing when their heat source does
  • Very long distances from the nearest town for both parts and labour

In practice

Worth knowing in Check

Detail on two local questions that are hard to cover properly over the phone.

Grit in the water is telling you something

Sand or fine grit at the aerators is not a nuisance to be filtered away and forgotten. It usually means one of three things: the well screen has failed, the pump is set low enough to be drawing from the accumulated sediment at the bottom of the bore, or the casing has a breach admitting material from the formation. Each of those is a structural matter, and each gets worse rather than better.

Meanwhile the grit itself does mechanical damage on its way through. Scoring pump impellers, cutting valve seats so taps drip, and settling in the base of the water heater. A sediment filter ahead of the house protects the fixtures and is worth fitting, but treat it as a symptom control while the cause gets diagnosed, not as the repair. Raising the pump a few feet is sometimes the entire fix.

What actually prevents a winter split

Freeze damage is one of the few plumbing failures that is almost entirely preventable, and the prevention is unglamorous. Disconnect and drain every hose in November. A hose left attached traps water in the tap body where it cannot drain, and that is how the great majority of outdoor taps split. Close any interior shutoff serving an outdoor tap and leave the tap open through the winter so the section between them stays empty.

Then insulate what crosses unheated space: crawl spaces, garages, outbuildings and any run against an exterior wall. Foam covers on taps help a little and cost little, but they will not save a tap full of trapped water on a hard night. If a tap has frozen once it will freeze again, and replacing it with a correctly pitched frost-free sillcock ends the problem permanently.

Questions

Plumbing in Check, answered

Yes. Check is covered 24 hours a day, along with Christiansburg, Catawba, Cloverdale, Callaway, Buchanan and the rest of Southside & Southwest. If your address sits just outside Check itself, ring anyway; coverage is wider than any list of place names.

Plateau elevation producing the longest and deepest cold in this part of Virginia. Fractured-rock wells with unpredictable yield and slow recovery.

Your well is its own answer, and it can differ sharply from the one next door. Around Check bedrock wells commonly return hardness and iron together, which is why the staining and the scale often arrive at the same time. Bacteria and nitrate are worth testing annually whatever the mineral content; a fuller panel every three to five years covers the rest.

Harder than most of Virginia. Check gets sustained sub-freezing spells rather than the odd cold night, which is what finds uninsulated crawl-space runs, unheated outbuildings and hose bibs left connected. Disconnecting every hose in November prevents the majority of outdoor tap failures.

Municipal collection serves Check. The line between your house and the main is your responsibility, and its condition is worth knowing before it announces itself.

Look at the pressure gauge by the tank: note what it reads when the pump starts and stops, and whether the pump is cycling rapidly while a tap runs. If it cycles every few seconds, switch it off at the breaker. That protects the pump from what is usually a much cheaper tank fault.

In most cases yes. Emergencies, a burst pipe, sewage backing up, no water at all, are prioritised over scheduled work, and someone is reachable at any hour. For planned work such as a repipe or a water heater replacement, we will normally offer a slot within a few days.
